After the “Wende“ in 1989/1990, the conversion of
former military spaces under the premise “inwards before outwards“ was
consequently pushed forward, especially the inner city spaces were
systematically developed. Because of their floor plans and their
architecture, historical barrack facilities proved to be suitable
for accomodating public institutions like the town hall, the regional
court or the evangelic school.
In contrast, barrack facilities dating from different decades of the
20th century qualify for being converted into residential buildings.
Starting in the mid-nineties, open spaces of these former military
sites were developed for the construction of single family houses to
meet the growing demand in this segment. The emerging single family
house settlements near the centre fit into the city’s urban structures.
At
the same time, the combination of multi family houses and single family
houses successfully counteracts social segregation in the newly emerging
vicinities. Representative examples in this context are the ensembles
in the Heimburger Straße, in the Eichendorffsiedlung
and at the airport.
